Drums

Students can begin drum lessons at age eight. Students need to be able to reach both the pedal and the high hat. Drum lessons are taught on a drum kit in our studios but students are able to get started practicing at home on practice pads before purchasing or renting a drum kit. Our drums lessons stress proper technique so students can develop quickly.

Students first learn basics such as technique and stick control, which are critical for new drummers. Once a sufficient level of proficiency is achieved, students will learn to use the snare, hi-hat, crash cymbal, bass drum, tom toms, floor toms and ride cymbal together.

Technique instruction is provided using materials from the Royal Conservatory of Music percussion syllabus. In addition to providing students with a clear, well-paced path for their musical development, the material aims to develop the technique necessary to successfully meet the student's developmental challenges. Study in the Conservatory percussion repertory will also prepare students for examinations.

Drum lessons at the Stouffville Academy will also provide students with knowledge of many different styles, including rock, pop, metal, jazz, blues and Latin music. Students are taught drum set rudiments and exercises as well as drum theory and notation. Students are always encouraged to bring in material that they are interested in learning.
