DANCE POLICIES

Dance Policies

2026–2027 Season

Our Approach

These policies are here to help every dancer learn in a safe, positive and well-organized environment. We appreciate families working with us to support consistent attendance, respectful behaviour and a studio experience where students can focus, grow and enjoy dancing.

Welcome to Dance at Stouffville Academy

We want every student’s time at Stouffville Academy to be positive, productive and enjoyable. Our Dance program is designed to build strong technique, confidence, musicality and a lasting love of dance in a supportive environment.

The policies below help our dancers, families and educators know what to expect throughout the season. If you ever have a question or concern, please reach out. A quick conversation with our office can often help us find the best way forward.

1.

Attendance & Commitment

Regular attendance is important for every dancer’s progress and for the progress of the class as a whole. Your child’s place in class is reserved specifically for them, so we ask families to make every reasonable effort to attend consistently and avoid scheduling other activities or appointments during regular class time.

If your dancer is unable to attend, please let our office know rather than contacting the teacher directly.

There is no refund or credit for missed classes or lessons because the child’s place, teacher time, and program costs remain reserved. Group class absences are not eligible to be made up.

Ongoing or frequent absences can affect both individual progress and group preparation, so please speak with us if attendance becomes difficult.

2.

Arriving Ready for Class

Being ready when class begins helps dancers settle in, warm up properly and make the most of their class time.

Please arrive with enough time for your dancer to be dressed, prepared and ready to begin on time.

Dancers should wear the required Dance attire, have hair secured as outlined in the Dance Dress Code, and bring any required shoes or equipment.

If a dancer arrives after the warm-up has finished, they may be required to complete an appropriate warm-up on their own before joining the class. This helps make sure their body is properly prepared so they can participate safely.

3.

A Positive Learning Environment

Dance classes work best when students feel safe, respected and able to concentrate. We ask dancers to:

  • Be attentive and ready to learn.
  • Treat fellow students, teachers, staff and families with kindness and respect.
  • Follow the teacher’s instructions and use studio equipment appropriately.
  • Ask questions when they are unsure or need help.
  • Contribute to a positive class environment where everyone has room to learn and try new things.

We understand that children are still learning how to manage attention, emotions and group expectations. If behaviour repeatedly interferes with the safety or learning of the class, we will connect with the family so we can talk through the concern and determine appropriate next steps.

If your child has a disability, support need or circumstance that may affect participation, please speak with us. We welcome the opportunity to understand your child’s needs and discuss practical supports that may help them participate successfully.

4.

The Studio

Our Dance studios are active teaching spaces, and a calm, focused environment helps dancers make the most of their class time.

Please do not enter, interrupt or knock on a studio door while a class is underway unless there is an urgent reason. Food and drinks are not permitted inside the Dance studios.

5.

Parent Viewing

We know how much parents love seeing their children dance, and we want you to be able to enjoy those moments too. Every Stouffville Academy Dance studio is equipped with closed-circuit viewing, so parents can watch classes from our office area.

We generally keep parents outside the studio during regular classes. For young dancers especially, having Mom or Dad in the room can be a distraction in the best possible way. They are naturally excited to see you, show you what they are doing and check for your reaction. Giving them a little space helps them focus on their teacher, become more independent and feel comfortable trying new things.

Parents are invited into the studio during the first week of the season to meet the teacher and get a feel for the class environment. We also invite families back before the Christmas break so you can see what your child has been learning and celebrate the progress they have made.

The closed-circuit system gives families the best of both worlds: your dancer can stay focused in class, while you can still watch their progress and enjoy the experience from just outside the studio.

6.

Teacher Absences & Instructor Changes

Consistency matters, and we do our best to provide dancers with a stable teaching experience throughout the season. Occasionally, however, an instructor may be unavailable because of illness or another unexpected circumstance.

When this happens, we will make every reasonable effort to provide a qualified substitute teacher so the class can continue as scheduled. In special circumstances, Stouffville Academy may also need to make a permanent instructor change. Any replacement will be selected with the needs of the class and the quality of instruction in mind.

7.

Inclement Weather & Closures

Weather conditions can change quickly, and an afternoon or evening class may still run even when daytime schools have closed. Please do not assume that Stouffville Academy classes are cancelled because another organization or school board has closed.

If severe weather requires Stouffville Academy to cancel classes, we will notify families by email and post an update on our social media channels. If conditions are uncertain, please check your email or our social media before travelling to Stouffville Academy.

8.

Dance Tuition & Registration

Tuition for Stouffville Academy’s 2026–2027 full-season Dance classes is based on the entire September-to-June season rather than on the number of classes held in an individual calendar month.

For ease of billing, annual tuition is divided into nine equal payments processed from September through May. Some months naturally include more instructional weeks than others, so each payment is one installment of the annual tuition rather than payment for a specific number of classes in that month.

  • The Dance Schedule shows the amount of one tuition payment.
  • HST is additional.
  • A $25 annual registration fee per student applies at registration.
  • Current class times, availability and tuition payment amounts are available on the Dance Schedule page.

9.

Withdrawing from Dance

Learning to dance is rewarding, but it can also be challenging. A dancer may need time to become comfortable with a new teacher, build friendships, develop skills and experience the confidence that comes with progress. For that reason, we ask families to give the program a fair opportunity before deciding to withdraw.

If your child is struggling or you have concerns, please contact our office before withdrawing. Sometimes a different class time, dance style or other adjustment can make a meaningful difference, and we are happy to talk through the options with you.

If you decide that withdrawal is necessary, written notice through the required withdrawal form is needed. Simply missing classes does not constitute notice of withdrawal.

  • For withdrawal notice received before the 15th of the month, payment is required through the end of the current month.
  • For withdrawal notice received on or after the 15th of the month, payment is required through the end of the following month.
