These policies are here to help private Music lessons run smoothly and give each student the best opportunity to learn. We appreciate families working with us to support consistent attendance, clear communication and a positive learning experience.
We want every student’s Music experience to be positive, productive and enjoyable. Private Music lessons are personalized around each student’s pace, interests and goals, with a focus on strong technique, musicianship and a lasting love of music.
The policies below help students, families and educators know what to expect throughout the season. If you ever have a question or concern, please reach out. A quick conversation with our office can often help us find the best way forward.
Private Music lesson times are coordinated through the Stouffville Academy office. Please do not arrange permanent scheduling changes directly with your teacher.
A requested lesson day and time is subject to final confirmation by Stouffville Academy because teacher availability can change as registrations are processed.
Once a lesson time is confirmed, that regular time is reserved specifically for the student.
If you need a permanent schedule change, contact our office. We will do our best to find another suitable option based on teacher and schedule availability.
Students should arrive ready to begin at their scheduled lesson time. If a student arrives late, the lesson will still finish at the regularly scheduled time so the next student’s lesson can begin on time.
We understand that occasional delays happen. Arriving consistently on time helps students settle in, make full use of their teacher’s time and maintain steady progress.
Your student’s lesson time and teacher are reserved specifically for them. Please make every reasonable effort to attend consistently and avoid scheduling other appointments or activities during the regular lesson time.
If your child will be absent, please notify the Stouffville Academy office as early as possible rather than asking the teacher to change the schedule directly.
There is no refund or credit for missed lessons because the student’s lesson time, teacher time and program costs remain reserved.
When at least 48 hours’ notice is provided, a student may receive up to two make-up lessons during the school year, subject to teacher and schedule availability.
Lessons missed with less than 48 hours’ notice, including no-shows, are not eligible for a make-up. Make-up lessons are not available for absences in May.
Occasionally, an instructor may be unavailable because of illness or another unexpected circumstance. Whenever practical, Stouffville Academy may arrange a qualified substitute so the lesson can continue as scheduled.
If Stouffville Academy must cancel a lesson and an appropriate substitute or alternative is not available, we will contact the family with the applicable make-up, credit or scheduling information.
In special circumstances, Stouffville Academy may need to replace a student’s regular teacher with another qualified educator. If a change is needed, we will work to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Weather conditions can change quickly, and afternoon or evening Music lessons may still run even when daytime schools have closed. Please do not assume that Stouffville Academy is closed because another school or organization has cancelled.
If severe weather requires Stouffville Academy to cancel lessons, we will notify families by email and post an update on our social media channels. If conditions are uncertain, please check your email or our social media before travelling to Stouffville Academy.
Private Music lessons are $31 per 30-minute lesson. For students beginning at the start of the 2026-2027 season, tuition is calculated for 36 instructional weeks and divided into equal installments of $124 for ease of billing.
Current lesson times, availability and tuition information are available on the Music Schedule page. Requested lesson times remain subject to confirmation by Stouffville Academy.
Most students will use method books, sheet music or other learning materials selected by their teacher as they progress. Please wait for the teacher’s recommendation before purchasing materials so they match the student’s level, instrument and goals.
Books and other required learning materials may be an additional cost beyond tuition. Your teacher or our office will let you know what is needed and how any required materials will be provided or charged.
Regular practice between lessons is an important part of learning an instrument or developing the voice. Short, consistent practice is usually more effective than an occasional long session, and each teacher will set goals that suit the student’s age, instrument and stage of learning.
Parents do not need a musical background to help. Creating a regular practice time, reducing distractions and encouraging effort can make a meaningful difference.
Parents are welcome to observe private Music lessons. Some students benefit from having a parent present, especially when they are young and the parent will help with practice at home, while others concentrate better independently. You and the teacher can decide what works best for your child.
Our private Music suites are active teaching spaces, and a calm environment helps students and teachers make the most of each lesson.
Please avoid interrupting another student’s lesson unless there is an urgent reason. Food and drinks are not permitted inside the private Music suites.
If your child is becoming discouraged or you feel the current lesson arrangement is not the right fit, please talk to us before stopping lessons. Sometimes a change of repertoire or teaching approach can renew a student’s interest. In other cases, a different teacher or instrument may be a better match.
Having multiple Music educators and several instruments available gives us more flexibility to help families explore another option when one is needed.
Learning a new instrument or developing the voice can be very rewarding, but progress is not always linear. Students may need time to become comfortable with a teacher, develop practice habits and experience the satisfaction that comes with new skills.
If your child is struggling or you have concerns, please contact our office before withdrawing. A different teacher, instrument, repertoire choice or lesson time may help, and we are happy to talk through the options with you.
If you decide that withdrawal is necessary, written notice through the required withdrawal form is needed. Simply missing lessons does not constitute notice of withdrawal.
For absences, scheduling, billing, withdrawals or concerns about your child’s Music experience, please contact the Stouffville Academy office. Keeping administrative changes with the office helps us keep records accurate and coordinate with your teacher.
